Bespoke WordPress
Website For Art
Gallery

We worked with Southampton City Council to launch a standalone bespoke WordPress website for Southampton City Art Gallery, to move it off their main council website.

The aim of the website was to give visitors better viibility on exhibitions, events and workshops as well as allowing them to browse the impressive collection online.

Bespoke Design

Being housed on the main Southampton City Council website meant that Southampton City Art Gallery had no real online identity. Through the launch of the dedicated website we were able to help them develop a unique look and feel with a strong colour palette.

Due to the nature of the organisation, the Art Gallery team wanted the website to let their great images of the artwork do the talking. To achieve this, we opted for large full width images with minimal text to reudce distraction from the art.

We also revised their colour palette to introduce some new more vibrant shades – this not only helped with distinguishing the website from the main council site, but also helped draw the eye to key information about exhibitions and calls to actions.

Integrating the Collection

One of the key aspirations for the team at Southampton City Art Gallery was to have the collection integrated into the website – allowing visitors to be able to browse through some of the works from one of the most renowned collections in the UK.

When a visitor arrives at the Collection page, they can quickly navigate to their area of interest and browse through all the related pieces from the collection.

With around 15,000 items in the collection in total, of which 5,300 items are in the art collection, this approach makes it quick and easy for the art gallery team to add and categorise the works.

If a visitor sees a piece they are interested in, they can click through and see more information – including the location and other works by the same artist.

Generating Bookings & Enquiries

As well as naturally attracting interest in items from the collection – either to come and view or to consider hiring or purchasing – the website also has a number of other key calls to action including venue hire and bookings for their workshops and activities.

The website integrates with their chosen booking system which houses all of their upcoming activities. Since the website has launched, Southampton City Art Gallery have seen a notable increase in the amount of enquiries and bookings.

Testimonial

My experience of working with the team at Atelier on the new Southampton City Art Gallery website was superb. We have always been impressed with their professional approach, and they certainly didn’t let us down on this occasion either. The website was delivered on time, on budget and most importantly, looks great!
