Unity Online: Website Design & Development Project

Unity came to Atelier with a website design project, aiming to boost the visibility of their community support services with an accessible, user-friendly website that could be managed in-house.

Unity

Unity is a non-profit incorporated charity supported by Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire County Council.

As a community-focused organisation, Unity provides a wide range of support services across Test Valley, including information and signposting, social prescribing, home support, and more.

The goal of this project was to redesign and develop a user-friendly, accessible website that showcases Unity’s services, and improves user engagement, whilst allowing Unity’s internal teams to update and manage the website moving forward.

Unity's Project Goals

Unity required a modernised website that presented its range of services clearly, making  it easier for users to find the right information quickly.

Unity’s project goals included:

  • Clear representation of services – display Unity’s varied services whilst ensuring users can easily navigate between them.
  • Distinct branding for each service area – implement unique colour schemes for each department, all under the cohesive Unity brand.
  • Improved user experience – design a streamlined, user-centric website with simple navigation.
  • Accessibility compliance – ensure the site meets accessibility standards, making it inclusive for all users.
  • Increased community engagement – encourage interaction through event calendars, booking features, volunteer sign-up forms and a community directory.
  • Seamless internal management – provide Unity’s team with tools and training to manage content, events, mobility bookings, and services, without external support.
  • Enhanced security – implement security measures, including two-factor authentication and varying user permissions, to protect sensitive user data.

Cohesive Branding with Distinct Service Areas

We maintained Unity’s overarching brand identity, whilst giving each service area its own colour palette.

This clearly differentiated between services, making it easier for users to navigate, but maintained Unity’s brand identity throughout.

Seamless Navigation and User-Friendly Design

We created a clean, intuitive navigation that guides users to the right information quickly. The website’s design is simple yet aesthetically pleasing, reducing friction and improving user experience.

Easy-to-Use Content Blocks

We designed flexible drag-and-drop content blocks that allow Unity’s team to easily manage and update the website in-house.

Full Accessibility Compliance

Ensuring the website meets WCAG standards was a priority – the site supports screen readers, includes proper colour contrast, and follows best practices for accessibility.

Mobility Hire Shop

We implemented an online shop with a booking system for mobility equipment hire. Users can browse, check availability, and book directly, and Unity staff can efficiently manage stock and rentals.

Appointment Booking

A flexible appointment booking system allows users to book appointments across Unity’s services. This helps Unity manage appointments efficiently while ensuring users can easily access the support they need.

Volunteer Opportunities

By submitting a simple form, organisations can now get their volunteer opportunities listed on Unity’s website. The Unity team can then post the listing, connecting volunteers with local causes.

Community Directory

We created a self-managed directory that lets organisations sign up to be featured. Once they have been admin-approved, they can update their own directory listing via a login area.

Tiered User Access

To improve security and make the website easy-to-use for Unity’s various internal teams, we implemented tiered user access. Now, depending on role, user permissions can be updated to limit access to specific areas of the backend.

Performance of the New Website

Comparing the year-on-year data, Unity saw significant improvements in organic performance and user engagement after the launch of the new website.

Organic Search Performance

  • Clicks – increased by 71.8%
  • Impressions – increased by 141%
  • Average position in search results – improved from 30.7 to 18.5

User Engagement Across All Channels

  • Page views – increased by 100.24%
  • Average engagement time – increased by 87.79%
  • Engagement rate – improved by 23.27%
  • Bounce rate – reduced by 27.41%
