Unity Online: Website Design & Development
We created a user-friendly, accessible website for Unity, boosting the visibility of their community support services.
Covesion, a UK leader in nonlinear optical crystals, partnered with Atelier to modernise its website, ensuring intuitive navigation, accessible information, and a strong “Made in Britain” identity for both academic and industry audiences.
““We [Covesion] make frequency conversion solutions for scientific applications, including lasers. We are at the cutting edge of technology and we wanted a website that reflected the company.” – Mike Day, CEO of Covesion
Covesion, a UK-based leader in nonlinear optical crystals, serves industries that require precision photonics solutions, including a growing focus on quantum technology
Their goal was to strengthen their role as an innovator in quantum applications, while continuing to support other fields within photonics.
Covesion’s solutions range from high-performance chips to fully integrated optical systems, tailored to meet specific wavelength requirements for clients across various sectors.
“We engaged Atelier to update our website, which we were dreading quite frankly – we had a really bad experience setting up and designing the previous website. But, the way Atelier engaged with us was fantastic.”
Covesion approached Atelier with a vision to modernise its website to:
“They [Atelier] were friendly, helpful, and understanding. They listened to us and they focused on the essentials.”
Atelier’s website redesign and redevelopment process centres around a structured, user-focused approach, ensuring each stage aligns with Covesion’s needs:
The project kicked off with an in-depth scoping session, informed by Covesion’s requirements.
The scoping clarified project objectives, target audience needs, and core messaging around Covesion’s focus on quantum technology, while maintaining its photonics market expertise.
“They use a proven methodology that really got to understand our customers, how they would use the website and how best to communicate with them.”
Atelier worked with Covesion to develop user personas to understand the primary user groups, including PhD researchers, procurement managers, and product engineers.
By mapping user journeys, we structured the website to meet diverse user needs – whether for research, technical specifications, or product procurement.
We created a sitemap, organised around Covesion’s solutions, product categories and technical documents, making it easy for users to find what they need.
Wireframes focused on guiding users quickly to relevant content, including downloadable resources and contact pages, to streamline enquiry and conversion.
The design brief called for a clean, professional layout that highlighted Covesion’s technical expertise and innovation in quantum applications.
Using the idea of light and the wide range of colours on the light spectrum, the Atelier team worked with Covesion to create moving animations. These animations created a visually interesting representation of how PPLN crystals are used.
Our design also emphasised “Made in Britain” messaging and easy access to European markets. Covesion’s values of technical support, accessibility, and quality were woven into the visuals and copy, ensuring users feel supported and informed.
With design approval, we developed a comprehensive technical specification that addressed Covesion’s specific requirements.
Key features included an events calendar to highlight upcoming industry engagements, an improved search function to enhance access to products and resources, and a reorganised resource layout to reinforce Covesion’s position as a thought leader.
Additionally, we integrated a downloadable catalogue (with data capture) and advanced product filtering to further enhance the user experience across Covesion’s diverse product offerings.
“They helped with the technical aspects, which were outside of our understanding, and we launched the website on time and budget.”
After rigorous testing for functionality and responsiveness, we completed an SEO setup, optimising on-page elements for target keywords in quantum and photonics technology.
The website launched on September 11, 2024, allowing for continued live tests to ensure a seamless website experience.
“The work that they did as far as setting up the personas was incredibly useful to us in the wider sales effort for Covesion. We use it day-to-day with our international customer base.”
Our work with Covesion’s user personas informed critical elements of the website:
Across all user personas, there was a focus on highlighting Covesion’s technical expertise, demonstrating this across the site, from key pages such as the Knowledge Hub, right through to the contact form.
Comparing website performance 2 months pre and post launch, Covesion’s website saw significant performance improvements in Google’s search results:
“They managed the project incredibly well and kept us on track. They delivered their promises and hit deadlines.”
The redesigned website has strengthened Covesion’s presence in the quantum technology and photonics sectors.
With a 26% increase in clicks and 143.1% increase in average engagement time, the new site shows the impact of a clear, user-focused design.
Atelier’s approach has helped Covesion meet its business goals and engage its audience more effectively, providing a solid foundation for future growth.
